Geocaching - A Treasure Finding Experience

Among many of San Luis Obispo’s unique and fun activities, one hobby is overlooked.

Geocaching is best described to be the ultimate treasure hunting adventure, and this isn’t exclusive to the San Luis Obispo area; it happens all over the world. It’s up to the adventurer to find these hidden ‘gems’ both at a local and global scale.

San Luis Obispo is an ideal spot to geocache with your family and friends. You can go for a hike, take a walk around the neighborhoods or parks, stop by museums, or even Bubblegum Alley located downtown. Thesecaches are virtually found anywhere and everywhere imaginable.

What is a geocache?

You’re looking for caches (containers, typically an ammo box, to as small as a magnetic micro tin case) filled with arcade trinkets. These small treasures are well hidden from plain sight. Once you find the prize, log in your visit and do an exchange of belongings. Sometimes, there are ‘travel bugs’, which are designatedgeo objects that travel around the world. These are logged in on the official site so you can see where it has been.

How does it work?

  1. Log onto geocaching.com
  2. Create a free account and start searching / creating your own cache,
wherever you are in the world. (San Luis Obispo’s zip codes: 93405 and 93401)
  3. Select which caches you wish to search for. *Pay attention to the size and difficulty.*
  4.  Plug in the coordinates into your Smartphone or GPS.
  5. Once you’re at the site, look for the cache and look up the hints, if listed.
  6. After finding the prize, exchange belongings and don’t forget to log in your visit.
  7. Log in your experience at geocaching.com.

Tips

  • Easy finds are usually called park-n-grab.
  • Geocache lingo: FTF, first-time-find.
  • New to this hobby and don’t have much time? Try looking for the
“Lion House Cache and TB Rest Stop”, “Bubblegum Alley” and the
    “On a Mission Wall” one.
