Festival Mozaic (formerly the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival) has announced its 2010 summer season, which marks the festival’s 40th year of presenting intimate musical experiences on California’s picturesque Central Coast. The annual summer festival will take place July 15-25 in more than 10 locations across San Luis Obispo County.
To create an immersive musical experience, the festival chooses a theme each summer. This summer’s focus is on musical origins, presenting works that came into being under unusual circumstances.
“Classical music reflects both the rich complexities of intimate human interaction, as well as the nature of the larger society,” said Music Director and virtuoso violinist Scott Yoo. “This summer, we want to reinforce that that these exquisitely-crafted works sprang out of very human circumstances.”
The 2010 program explores unrequited love, political oppression, the horrors of war and other influences that resulted in works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvořák, Ravel, Ginastera, Lutoslawski, and contemporary American composers Paul Schoenfield and Patrick Zimmerli.
The festival draws players from the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony and a host of fine orchestras across the country.
Each summer, more than 7,000 attendees enjoy concerts in historic, spectacular venues such as Hearst Castle and the historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, Chapel Hill in wine country, and in the county’s many scenic wineries, parks and gardens. Festival visitors also take advantage of the Central Coast’s wineries, restaurants, hiking, biking, boating and seaside activities.
